Flames of resistance rise against Hardee's CEO as labor secretary

February 9, 2017

The "pot" of resistance is still boiling under Labor Department Secretary nominee and Hardee's parent company CEO Andrew Puzder. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer this morning implored President Donald Trump to withdraw his nomination of the fast food mogul, according to numerous news reports.

Schumer's call to action comes after hearing from organizations and individuals who have spoken out against the CKE Group CEO as a possible leader of the nation's primary organization for workers' issues.

"You could not have picked a worse nominee to uphold these goals than Andew Puzder," CNN quoted Schumer, a New York Democrat, as saying today at a news conference. "Everything in his career is antithetical to the goals of the Department of Labor. … They ought to withdraw Mr. Puzder before he further embarrasses this administration and further exposes the hypocrisy of President Trump, who says one thing to the American worker and does another."

Puzder's hearing for possible confirmation to the post is set for Feb. 16 with the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Fellow senator Patty Murray also spoke at the morning news conference and is a ranking member of the committee. She said that if Puzder keeps his hat in the ring for the job, he could expect both Democrats and the nation's workforce to thoroughly review his record and speak up loudly about concerns.
