Gold Star Chili opens University of Kentucky location

August 7, 2011

Cincinnati-based Gold Star Chili is opening its newest store location on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington on Aug. 9.

The latest unit is Gold Star Chili's 26th in Kentucky and fourth in the Lexington area. That includes a Hamburgh, Ky., location, which was the chain's top performing store last year.

The University of Kentucky Gold Star Chili is owned and operated by veteran Lexington restaurateur Steve Taylor.

"Having lived in both Lexington and the Greater Cincinnati area, I have a 100-percent confidence level that Cincinnati-style chili will catch on like wildfire at the university and surrounding neighborhoods. It's a 'crave food;' once you've tried it, you have to keep coming back for more," Taylor said.

Gold Star is the Official Chili of Rupp Arena and operates a concession in the facility during University of Kentucky basketball games, the state basketball tournament and other events. Additionally, Gold Star is a sponsor of the Lexington Legends and operates a concession at the ballpark.

Gold Star Chili has partnered with the University of Kentucky's Center for Community Outreach. The Center for Community Outreach connects University of Kentucky students with more than 200 non-profits in the Lexington area and helps students make a difference in their communities.

Gold Star now has nearly 100 restaurants located throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
