Hardee's donates to UNC cancer center

February 11, 2009

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Hardee's donated $14,500 to the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UNC men's basketball game in Chapel Hill this past weekend, the company has announced.

Bill Boddie, president and chief executive officer of Boddie-Noell Enterprises, the largest Hardee's franchisee in North Carolina as well as the United States, presented the check to Dr. H. Shelton Earp, director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center during halftime at Saturday's game.

Over the past year, Hardee's has donated $500 for each touchdown made by the Tar Heels football team at the Meineke Car Care Bowl as well as $25 for every 3-point shot made by a UNC men's or women's basketball player at all regular season games, both home and away.

The check presentation took place immediately following the Hardee's Shoot Out Against Cancer in the Dean E. Smith Center where former UNC All-American and current women's assistant basketball coach Charlotte Smith sunk several shots to increase the amount of money donated by Hardee's.

During the contest, Smith made five free throws worth $500 each and one 3-pointer worth $2,500 from the same spot as her winning shot in 1994. Thanks to Smith's efforts, $5,000 was added to the grand total donated by Hardee's to the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As part of the UNC system, the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only public comprehensive cancer center for the people of North Carolina.
