Immigration reform to help restaurants
March 27, 2006
CHICAGO — The Senate Judiciary Committee approved legislation to comprehensively revamp America's immigration system. The committee approved the legislation by a final vote of 12-6. According to the National Restaurant Association, the legislation is a victory for the restaurant industry.
The legislation would address two key points of the Association's immigration reform agenda: creating a workable system for employers to hire from abroad when U.S. workers are unavailable, and creating a program for hardworking, undocumented immigrants to pay a fine, learn English, and earn green cards while staying on the job. Other complex issues, such as employer obligations to check the work authorization of employees, will be carried over for consideration by the full Senate.
