KFC addresses inaccurate nutritional reports of test sandwich

August 24, 2009

KFC's Double Down sandwich, which has been in test in Providence, R.I., and Omaha, Neb., for several weeks, has received unprecendented attention, much of it centered around inaccurate nutritional content information.

"KFC is used to creating buzz with new product introductions, although it's not common for items that are just in test," said KFC spokesman Rick Maynard. "Unfortunately, in this case, a lot of the buzz is the result of some inaccurate information in the media regarding the product's nutrition information."

QSRWeb.com yesterday referred to a story posted by The Vancouver Sun, which claimed to have conducted a nutritional analysis of the sandwich. That news story said the sandwich likely would surpass the caloric content of Wendy's Triple with Everything and Cheese and the Burger King Stacker Quad and had 124 percent of the daily recommended fat allowance.

KFC provided corrected information on the estimated nutritional content of the Double Down, which features two slices of bacon, Pepperjack and Swiss cheese slices and the Colonel's secret sauce between two filets of KFC Original Recipe chicken. The nutritional content for the sandwich in test includes:
  • Calories: 590
  • Calories from fat: 280
  • Total fat: 31g
  • Saturated fat: 10g
  • Trans fat: 0g
  • Cholesterol: 190mg
The nutritional information may changed if the product is launched nationally, Maynard said.
