LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation has announced its KFC Colonel's Scholars program will send off its largest class of students to college this fall.
More than 70,000 graduating high school seniors who excelled in and out of the classroom applied for the scholarships starting in January 2008. In its third year, the KFC Colonel's Scholars program awarded 100 scholarships based on financial need and the impact of students on their schools and communities. Each award winner is eligible to receive up to $20,000 during the next four years to pursue a bachelor's degree at an accredited public university within his or her home state.
This year's class of KFC Colonel's Scholars is twice the size of the previous two years' classes and represents diverse backgrounds and talents. One Scholar maintained a 4.0 grade-point average while working three part-time jobs to help support her family. Another Scholar launched an innovative stay-in-school program called "Please Come Back." The initiative convinced five school dropouts to return to class.
