That humble and oh-so-American dish of macaroni-and-cheese is shaping up as the unlikely battlefront for the latest QSR menu wars. KFC announced that starting Monday, Aug. 26, the brand will introduce original and spicy Mac & Cheese Bowls to its $5 Fill Up lineup, a news release said. This follows competitor Chick-fil-A's announcement of an addition of the cheesy pasta mashup to its menu last week.
The main dish menu item combines macaroni-and-cheese, then tops it with popcorn chicken and a three-cheese blend sprinkle. Also available is a "hotter" version of the dish in the chain's Spicy Mac & Cheese Bowl with KFC's Nashville Hot sauce.
"Mac and Cheese has a cult-like following, and bowl food is a trend that isn't going away anytime soon," KFC U.S. CMO Andrea Zahumensky, said in the release. "So, it made perfect sense to call up a favorite side dish to the big leagues, in a way that only we could, with Mac and Cheese Bowls."
The Mac & Cheese Bowl $5 Fill Up comes with a medium drink and chocolate chip cookie.
