The final so-called "supermoon" of the year — the Strawberry Moon — will begin its rosy reddish appearance Thursday evening and Krispy Kreme wants to put a look-alike doughnut in the hands of all those gazing at the sky over the full moon's anticipated three-day appearance.
The brand's Strawberry Supermoon doughnut will be available for one day only, on June 24, featuring a filling of strawberry "Kreme," dipped in strawberries and "Kreme" icing and topped with graham cracker "moon dust," a news release said.
The Strawberry Supermoon Doughnut is the latest addition to Krispy Kreme's history of space-based doughnuts including the chocolate glaze doughnut on the solar eclipse, original filled doughnut on Apollo 11's 50th Anniversary and Mars doughnut when NASA's Perseverance Rover made its landing.
June's full moon is called the Strawberry Moon because it occurs during harvesting season for strawberries in the northeastern U.S. In a rarity, it also happens to be the third consecutive month for a "supermoon," which occurs when the moon is orbiting closest to earth, making it appear larger and brighter.
