After a four-year hiatus from the market, Krispy Kreme is planning to return to Charlotte, N.C., with plans to open five shops.
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, the company closed its last Charlotte location in 2008.
The expansion plan includes sites near the UNC-Charlotte campus area.
Currently, the chain doesn't have more than three units open in any one market. Conversely, Dunkin' Donuts has 22 units in the Charlotte area.
The Charlotte Krispy Kremes will be company owned. The brand is headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C.
