Krystal has unveiled a smaller prototype in Center Point, Alabama. The 1,700-square-foot drive-thru features the first company store opening in more than 6 years with an advanced, sleek design using a smaller footprint, according to a press release.

A traditional Krystal weighs in at 2,700 square feet. The prototype uses 20% less kitchen space and doesn't have a dining room, focusing on to-go orders from its double-lane drive-thru. It also features a walk-up window or ordering and has a pick-up area for online orders and third-party delivery.

"This prototype signals a new day for Krystal," Thomas Stager, president of Krystal Restaurants, said in the press release. "We strategically sought more cost-efficient opportunities to generate a strong sales-to-investment outcome, as well as a design to fast track franchise development."

The prototype had a grand opening on Jan. 10.

Krystal Restaurants has nearly 300 restaurants in 10 states.
