McDonald's may be one of the biggest and oldest QSR chains, but proof that the brand's coffee-and-pastry-centric McCafe is still in the caterpillar stage just spread its wings in Paris. The mega-chain opened its second Paris-based McCafe unit, according to Motley Fool, and it has neither the look nor the hamburger-y smell of its golden-arched big brother. Instead, the menu and subdued decor of this unit shout "Watch out, Starbucks, you're in our sites!" The location offers none of the usual fast food favorites, rather its menu features stricly upscale coffee offerings and caffeine-compatible treats, including macaroons and tiramisu.
McDonald’s, last year, opened its first stand-alone McCafe in Toronto, Canada. Motley Foolquotes McDonald's Canada CEO John Betts as saying that the cafes are the chain’s response to customers’ newfound love for the McCafe menu at its other 36,000 or so McDonald's locations worldwide.
"The new stand-alone McCafé locations allow us to build on our strong coffee credentials and create even stronger connections with our brand by offering our guests the more complete café menu they've been asking us for," Betts told Motley Fool.
When reached Friday, via email, for further comment, McDonald's Global Communications Director Terri Hickey said, "The McCafe in Paris is a local test that began this summer, and it’s too soon to draw any (con)clusions from the test. As always we look forward to learning from our customers."
