McDonald's Canada catches Olympic fever

McDonald's Canada is adding to the growing excitement leading up to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games with the next phase of its multi-faceted platform to bring the Games to life and closer to home for Canadians across the country.
 
Through themed décor and exclusive limited-time product offerings, McDonald's is sharing the spirit of the games while also providing opportunities-of-a-lifetime to highly deserving members of local communities across Canada.
 
Customers can expect to see restaurants adorned with distinctive Olympic design elements featuring Canadian athletes such as snowboarders Brad Martin and Crispin Lipscomb, as well as freestyle skier Alexandre Bilodeau and former Olympian Cassie Campbell. Some select locations, 11 in all, will feature eye-catching exterior merchandising. In addition, beginning in January McDonald's crew across the country will wear special Olympics-themed uniforms.
 
Participating restaurants also will feature special limited-time product offerings including:
  • The Crème Brûlée Crunch McFlurry, which combines crunchy caramelized sugar bits swirled into delicious soft-serve ice cream. (Dec. 1 launch)
  • S'mores Pie featuring a pastry made with Graham crumbs and a chocolatey and marshmallow filling. (Dec. 1 launch)
  • Parmigiana Chicken Snack Wrap featuring real peddled parmesan cheese and savoury marinara sauce, all wrapped with seasoned crispy or grilled chicken in a flour tortilla. (Dec. 29 launch)
  • Happy Meal toys featuring official Olympic Mascots Miga, Quatchi and Sumi participating in Olympic and Paralympic sports will highlight a unique Canada-only promotion. (Jan. 29, 2010 launch)
  • Two new dipping sauces for Chicken McNuggets – Spicy Szechwan and Zesty Mango – celebrating the worldwide appeal of the games. (Feb. 2, 2010 launch)

McDonald's Olympic Champion Crew
More than 300 top-performing McDonald's employees will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of serving the world's best athletes, coaches, officials and media at the three on-site McDonald's restaurants while also attending select Olympic events and participating in cultural activities. 
 
McDonald's Champion Kids Eleven kids from across Canada recently learned during surprise announcements that they would experience first-hand the thrill of being in the middle of the action at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This global program will bring kids from all over the world to Vancouver – each accompanied by a parent or guardian – where they will attend Olympic events, meet athletes, visit cultural sites and interact with other. They also will have an opportunity to share details about their time at the Games with their local media.
 
McDonald's 2010 HopefulsThis program celebrates the importance of family and community on the journey to the pinnacle of sport. It supports the aspirations of 26 athletes from coast-to-coast to compete at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games and also recognizes the efforts of parents, as their children strive for the opportunity to represent Canada in the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The program provides grants to help offset some of the costs involved in areas such as training, coaching and traveling.
 
Legacy Playgrounds Three accessible playgrounds will be built in Richmond, Vancouver and Whistler as part of a 2010 Olympic legacy project. The playgrounds, which will offer a universal play environment to enable kids of all abilities to play together, will be located at Kitsilano Beach Park in Vancouver, along the Middle Arm Waterfront Greenway in Richmond and at the Celebration Plaza in Whistler. The project is sponsored by the B.C. Government, the Rick Hansen Foundation, Ronald McDonald's House Charities of Canada and 2010 Legacies Now.
