McDonald's is launching curbside delivery and mobile order-and-pay technology in the last quarter of this year at all 20,,000 U.S. restaurants, according to a release posted this afternoon by the company.
The chain dropped its delivery bomb during an investor call Wednesday afternoon, followed by the release. QSRweb.com is seeking follow-up information regarding details about the plan, which would shift a huge amount of customer traffic from drive-thru line to curbside parking in a relatively miniscule amount of prep time.
Most of McDonald's orders come through the drive-thru now, so the service could send much of that patronage to park curbside and wait for their orders. That, of course, opens up questions about construction at the chain's outlets to allow for increased cars in pickup zones.
Numerous other chains have also begun this practice, including the California-based Starbird.
