McDonald's has revamped its franchisee review process telling franchisees there will be a more stringent review every two decades as well as instituting new requirements regarding future store owners.
The burger chain is mandating next-gen owners ante up more cash to keep locations and name a single family member as operator, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
"This change is in keeping with the principle that receiving a new franchise term is earned, not given," McDonald's told the WSJ regarding the changes.
The brand is planning a meeting between franchisees and corporate leaders next week and there are already signs of a push back on the stipulations, according to the news outlet.
In the U.S., 95% of McDonald's stores are run and owned by franchisees. The brand operates more than 13,000 stores in the U.S.
