August 9, 2009
McDonald's Corp.'s continues to see positive same-store sales, although not to the level of the prior year. The company's global comparable sales rose 4.3 percent in July.
By segment results are as follows:
U.S. comps increased 2.6 percent, on top of a 6.7 percent increase in the same month last year, due to success of McCafe espresso-based coffees and the continued strength of McDonald's core menu.
European comps were up 7.2 percent, on top of a 7.6 percent increase in the same month last year due to strong sales growth in France, the United Kingdom as well as McDonald's tiered-menu approach complemented by local summertime offerings
Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa saw comps rise 2.1 percent, on top of a 7.2 percent increase in the same month last year, due to Australia's ongoing momentum, partly offset by China, as well as a focus on relevant menu choices, value and longer operating hours.
Systemwide sales declined 0.3 percent due to the negative impact of foreign currency translation, but were up 6.2 percent in constant currencies.
"We remain aligned behind our customer-focused Plan to Win, which continues to drive positive global comparable sales as we satisfy customers' demands for menu variety, value and convenience," said McDonald's CEO Jim Skinner.
