McDonald’s largest franchisee named a ‘best place to work’

July 10, 2014

Arcos Dorados, McDonald’s largest franchisee with more than 2,000 restaurants in Latin America and the Caribbean, has been ranked No. 4 on the “best places to work in Latin America” list, compiled by the Great Place to Work Institute. The No. 4 ranking is two spots higher than Arcos Dorados’ position in 2013.

According to a news release, the institute selects companies that stand out for having created a consistent, high-trust workplace culture across national borders.

“Being recognized as one of the top five companies in Latin America is a major achievement for Arcos Dorados. We are particularly proud to offer great first jobs to thousands of young Latin Americans,” CEO Woods Staton said in the release.

The results were based on surveys of more than 1.25 million employees throughout the region. Among the five top-ranked companies, Arcos Dorados was the largest with more than 95,000 employees in the region.

FTC rule broken?

In other Arcos Dorados news, some McDonald’s franchisees in Puerto Rico are claiming that McDonald’s Corp. broke a Federal Trade Commission rule by selling its Puerto Rican restaurants to the Latin American franchisee.

According to Bloomberg News, the FTC Franchise Rule requires disclosure of material information to franchisees. The seven Puerto Rican franchisees said this rule was broken when McDonald’s sold their stores and franchising rights in 2007.

The franchisees also allege that the company isn’t “conducting sufficient sales analysis before new McDonald’s open, leading to locations becoming crowded with too many restaurants.” The franchisees’ attorney said the company “did a bait and switch” by switching up the franchising system to put Arcos Dorados in control.
