McDonald’s plans New Zealand expansion

July 12, 2011

Calling the market "untapped," McDonald's development director, Brett Watson, told attendees at a retail conference in Auckland, New Zealand earlier this week that the company plans to expand in that country.

The New Zealand Herald reports that the chain will start with the development of nine units, two of which will open within the next three months.

McDonald's hopes to get the first new outlet up and running in Auckland by Sept. 9 when the Rugby World Cup starts.

The company's target is to open 170 new restaurants by the end of 2012.

McDonald's has already begun its expansion, opening several new units within the past few months, mainly in the North Island region. New outlets have opened in Albany, Mt. Wellington, Taumarunui, Paeroa, Whangaparaoa, Frankton at Queenstown, Wellington, Te Puke, The Base in Hamilton, Mt. Maunganui, Te Ngae in Rotorua, Constellation Drive on the North Shore and Richmond at Nelson.
