McDonald's plays for app sales with holiday giveaway

McDonald's is making a play for app sales next week by giving customers freebies based on in-app orders. For instance, the company will give away "the favorite menu items" of classic holiday characters — including a McFlurry in honor of Frosty the Snowman, Hotcakes for Buddy the Elf and an Egg McMuffin for the Grinch, according to a news release.

From Dec. 14 – Dec. 24, McDonald's customers can receive the menu items by making at least a $1 purchase through the brand's app.

In addition to the three previously mentioned characters, well-known faces from movies like "Christmas Vacation, " "Gremlins" and "Die Hard," which McDonald's deems a holiday flick. The promotion will end with Santa's favorite treat, free soft-baked chocolate chip cookies on Dec. 24.

The brand is supporting this campaign with a TV spot that will run during Dec. 13 football games, as well as on its YouTube channels and on social media.
