McDonald's is ending its Automated Order Taker using AI technology, according to a brand statement.
The Chicago-based burger chain has been using AI at the drive-thru in a partnership with IBM since 2021, but errant orders like bacon on ice cream and adding a larger number of sweet teas to an order is making it difficult to use, according to a New York Post report.
"Through our partnership with IBM, we have captured many learnings and feel there is an opportunity to explore voice ordering solutions more broadly. After thoughtful review, McDonald's has decided to end our current global partnership with IBM on AOT beyond this year. IBM remains a trusted partner and we will still utilize many of their products across our global System," the brand said in the statement.
AI ordering is used at more than 100 McDonald's drive-thrus.
