January 23, 2008
PHILADELPHIA — McDonald's Restaurants of the Greater Philadelphia Region Inc. has announced the kickoff of the 2008 McDonald's Go Active! Academic Awards program. The program will award $1,000 grants to up to 15 schools in the greater Philadelphia region selected for educational programs that encourage fifth- to eighth-grade students to lead balanced, active lives. Any teacher, principal or administrator employed by an eligible elementary or middle school may apply.
The goal of the program, now in its fourth year, is to reward local schools and teachers for creative educational programs that demonstrate an original approach to enhancing middle school students' physical fitness, nutrition awareness and/or health education, according to a news release.
McDonald's will host the official Go Active! kickoff event at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at The Discovery Charter School in Philadelphia. The event will feature appearances by the Philadelphia Kixx, "Socceroo" and McDonald's representatives including Ronald McDonald, who will lead a fitness workout for the school's sixth- to eighth-grade students and staff.
