McDonald's to nearly double number of Chinese locations

August 9, 2017

China will soon be the No. 2 market for fast food giant, McDonald's, with the chain planning to almost double its restaurants in the Asian nation in the next five years.

The news was reported today through the Associated Press wire service, and numerous media outlets, including USA Today. By 2022, McDonald's expects to grow its number of Chinese locations from the current 2,500 to 4,500, according to AP. That would make China the second largest market for the company after the U.S., replacing the current No.2, Japan.

Last week, McDonald's Corp., said it had completed a deal to sell ownership in all but 20 percent of its Chinese locations. The move is among many being made by U.S. restaurant brands following a drop-off in traffic to stateside restaurants.

McDonald's told AP that about 45 percent of the new Chinese locations will be in smaller cities, and 75 percent of new sites will offer delivery service.
