McDonald's U.S. comps up 2%

May 7, 2008

OAK BROOK, Ill. — Global comparable-store sales at McDonald's Corp. increased 5 percent in April and 6.8 percent year-to-date, the company has announced. Systemwide sales for McDonald's worldwide restaurants increased 13.7 percent in April, or 6.5 percent in constant currencies.

Comparable sales in the U.S. market rose 2 percent for the month as McDonald's breakfast menu and new products attracted more customers into the company's restaurants.

In Europe, April comps increased 6.3 percent led by France, the United Kingdom, Russia and Germany. The launch of the premium M beef burger in France and Germany, and the Monopoly promotion in the United Kingdom contributed to this growth.

The 7.8 percent increase in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa was fueled by strong comp growth in Australia, China and most other markets, partly offset by Japan. Local menu relevance and enhanced convenience through extended hours contributed to the region's April result, according to the company.   April 2008 consisted of one less Sunday and Monday and one more Tuesday and Wednesday compared with April 2007. The resulting adjustment varied by area of the world, ranging from approximately -1.8 percent to +0.3 percent.
