McD's franchisee, workers settle in 'dog diaper' COVID mask lawsuit

A California-based McDonald's franchise location has settled out of court following legal action brought by several employees that alleged the store owner provided workers with protective masks made from dog diapers and coffee filters in early 2020.
In the settlement, franchise operator Michael Smith denied the allegations and did not admit to any wrongdoing, according to a New York Times report. Neither lawyers for the plaintiffs nor defendants would comment regarding any financial settlement.
The suit was filed by workers who claimed Smith's lack of safety measures led to a coronavirus outbreak among employees and their families. The settlement stipulates the restaurant will enforce safety measures relating to preventing the spread of COVID-19 as well as the enforcement of paid sick leave policy. It also calls for the creation of a committee that will focus on compliance issues.
