Midwest Hardee's to bring back Big Shef

April 23, 2007

ST. LOUIS — Hardee's is bringing back the Burger Chef Big Shef hamburger for a limited time to the chain's locations in Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Ind., Fort Wayne, Ind., South Bend, Ind., and Dayton, Ohio.

The Big Shef was a signature burger on the Burger Chef menu in the 1970s and 80s. The quarter-pound burger featured two charbroiled patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce and special Big Shef sauce.

The Burger Chef Big Shef will replace the Big Twin on the Hardee's menu in these cities and will be priced at two for $3.

Burger Chef was founded in 1954 in Indianapolis by Frank and Donald Thomas. The company pioneered the "works bar", where customers could dress their burgers exactly as they wanted.

Hardee's parent CKE Restaurants Inc. bought Burger Chef stores in the mid-1990s and converted them to Hardee's or Carl's Jr. locations.
