Tortillas often stuffed with meat, cheese, rice, beans that English-speakers call burritos literally means "little donkey" in Spanish. And those delicious "little donkeys" have become key to many QSR operators, perhaps explaining why we take this Thursday to celebrate the food on National Burrito Day in the U.S.
Nobody's really quite sure why these popular tortilla-wrapped food packets got a name associated with what many consider a pack animal, but some theories suggest it might have to do with the burrito's appearance, which look a little like those rolled bundles you see on donkeys' backs in old Westerns.
Or another tale that is told across that technified gossip-column known as the internet, relays something like this entry found on the website, todayifoundout.com:
"One of the most popular stories (likely false) is that a man named Juan Mendez from Chihuahua, Mexico used a donkey to carry around his supplies for his food cart. To keep the food warm, he would wrap it up in a big homemade flour tortilla. ... Thus, the theory is that the concoction got its name because it was sold out of a donkey cart."
Whatever its' true roots, the facts are clear today that this portable package stuffed with all manner of edibles is a popular QSR staple, and particularly suited to today's consumers' needs since burritos are so well-suited to on-the-go eating and value pricing.
For those reasons and many more, we celebrate National Burrito Day along with the following QSRs offering special deals to mark the special day:
