New Burger King Whopper Bar to serve beer

January 21, 2010

Burger King'sWhopper Baralready has brought a whole new sense of hip to the burger chain. Now, the specialty concept designed for hot tourists spots will live up to its name. The newest Whopper Bar, which will open next month in South Beach in Miami, plans to sell beer alongside its burgers. The South Beach location will also debut a new premium burger and food delivery service for local guests.

"Burger King Corp.'s development strategy for the Whopper Bar involves carefully targeting marquee locations that often serve as consumer destinations," said Chuck Fallon, North America president, Burger King Corp. "Not only is South Beach in our backyard, but the warm weather, famous nightlife and colorful personality of the destination make it a great fit for a Whopper Bar restaurant. It also serves as a great opportunity to introduce U.S. Whopper Barguests to food delivery service and the addition of beer on the menu."

Whopper BarSouth Beach features a modern look and feel as well as the concept's specialized menu in which customers select their sandwich and instruct the expert "Whopper-istas" to build the burgers to order from a visible toppings theater. Guests may choose from an array of more than 20 favorites, including A.1. Thick & Hearty steak sauce, pepper bacon, guacamole and crispy onions. Exclusively at this U.S. location, restaurant guests can also choose from an array of Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors beer products, including Budweiser, Bud Light, Bud Light Lime and Miller Lite.

In keeping with South Beach's notoriously late-night crowd, the restaurant is open 24 hours a day. Burgers will be served around the clock, and breakfast is available from 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Whopper Bar South Beach also takes advantage of Miami's year-round sunshine with an outdoor dining area that seats more than 45 guests.

In addition, the "Bar Favorites" menu features the best premium sandwiches, such as the Bourbon Whopper sandwich and Pepper Bacon Steakhouse XT burger. The South Beach Whopper Bar also debuts an exclusive addition to the Bar Favorites line-up with the BK Black & Bleu Steakhouse XT burger, named for the bold taste of blue cheese and blackened Cajun sauce. The new, premium build features an extra thick, flame-broiled 7-ounce beef patty topped with blue cheese, pepper bacon, blackened Cajun sauce, onions, tomatoes and lettuce on a corn-dusted bun.

According toUSA Today, Burger King is not planning to serve beer at its traditional U.S. stores. The South Beach Whopper bar will serve its beer in special aluminum bottles to keep them extra cold and price then at $4.25. A Whopper combo with a beer will be $7.99 — about a $2 upcharge to the same combo meal with a fountain drink.

The South Beach Whopper Bar will be the first U.S. location to offer beef, following the lead of international locations. Whopper Bars in Singapore and Venezuela sell beer, as do Burger King restaurants in Germany and Japan, according to the story. Burger King Japan recently added whiskey to the evening menu, as it latches onto the highball craze there and markets its new "Bourbon Burger," accordingCNNGo.comThe new highball features U.S.-made Four Roses Whiskey cut with ginger ale or cola and when purchased with a Whopper Jr. Bourbon Burger retails for ¥500 ($5.55).

The company also announced that it willcontinue to strategically target carefully selected, high-traffic destinations for future Whopper Bar locations in potential cities such as New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Malaga, Spain and target high profile venues like sports arenas, airports and other tourist destinations. The company now has Whopper Bars at Universal CityWalk at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida and Munich.

Burger King has said that its intends tocreate an experiencethat rivals casual dining, thanks not only to the Whopper Bar but its new upscale 20/20 restaurant redesign. The chain also has a number of menu offerings planned for its new batch broilers, which are scheduled to be in all U.S. stores by the end of the month.
