New McDonald’s in progress for Michigan communities

The new facilities, replacing current and former McDonald's, will boast two drive-thru kiosks.

Two legacy McDonald’s restaurants, one in St. Johns and one in Portland, Michigan, will soon be the location for new McDonald's restaurants, according to a Lansing State Journal report.

The new facility replacing the demolished McDonald's restaurant on Old US-27 in St. John’s is slated to open its doors sometime this fall, and a final site plan has been completed for the new restaurant to replace the current location on Grand River Avenue in Portland. With regard to the latter project McDonald’s now also owns the adjoining lot at the corner of Bridge Street, which was once home to a tobacco store and gas station.

"When the building reaches a certain age it limits what you can do when you decide to remodel. This is especially true in the restaurant business where you have to adapt to changes in customer behavior as well as technology. At this point it makes more sense to scrap the building and start over from scratch," Jeff Brinks, engineer at Williams & Works, which is handling both new locations, told the Journal.

The two locations will boast a drive-thru with two kiosks for ordering to better service increased customer traffic. Brinks said the drive-thru customer base represents nearly 70 percent of business and will let the locations serve nearly 50 more car-based customers an hour versus the single kiosk that had been at both locations.
