N.Y. area Dunkin' Donuts launch recycled bag initiative
August 27, 2009
New York Tri-State area Dunkin' Donuts are offering a "Six for Three" bagel promotion as it kicks off a new program where in-store banners will be repurposed into Dunkin' Donuts tote bags.
Beginning today, customers can purchase six bagels of their choice for $3 at all participating stores in the New York Tri-State area. Dunkin' Donuts franchisees will later recycle the bagel promotion banners to create reusable bags.
A number of cities, including New York and Baltimore, have discussed charging fees to consumers for using plastic bags from restaurants and retailers. Earlier this summer, Washington, D.C., added a nickel tax for every plastic or paper bag used at restaurants, pharmacies and groceries, according to a story in the Washington Business Journal.
Dunkin' Donuts is encouraging franchisees to recycle their store banners to help reduce excess waste in their communities. The reusable bags can be distributed as a perk for loyal customers or as an incentive for hard-working crew members.
"We are excited that the New York market is the first to launch this recycled bag initiative," said Missy Maio, manager of field marketing for Dunkin' Donuts in the Central Atlantic Region. "This two-tiered program offers our customers a great value option and marks a small, symbolic step in increasing our commitment to the environment."
The New York Tri-State area includes 27 counties in New York and New Jersey and Fairfield County in Connecticut.
