N.Y.-area McDonald's celebrate decade of reading

NEW YORK — In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the New York Tri-State Area McDonald's "Check it Out" Reading Program, a Manhattan McDonald's will hold a special reading event Aug. 28, 2008.
Television personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck will join Ronald McDonald to read her favorite storybook to a group of childrenat the McDonald's restaurant located at 427 10th Ave. inManhattan at 1:30 p.m.
McDonald's "Check It Out" Reading Programgives children from kindergarten through fourth grade incentives to read during the summer. Italso serves to help kids get school-ready by getting a jump start on theirreading. "Check It Out" rewards local children with a free Happy Mealfor reading five books during the summer months. Kids can supplement friesand soda for Apple Dippers and 1 percent low-fat milk.
The "McDonald's Check It Out" Reading Program was created in 1998 toencourage reading, education and imagination. Since the program'sinception, the program has promoted summer reading for more than 1 million children in the New YorkTri-State Area.
