The New York Times: A New York City councilman has proposed a ban to keep fast food restaurants from opening within a tenth of a mile of the city's schools; existing locations would be exempt. Councilman Eric N. Gioia drafted the proposal after the release of the February report,"Effect of Fast Food Restaurants on Obesity,"found an increased obesityrate of at least 5.2 percent among teenagers at schools where fast-food outlets were a tenth of a mile — roughly one city block — or less away.
