N.Y.Tri-State McDonald's celebrates decade of reading program

June 24, 2008

ROSELAND, N.J. — This year marks the 10th anniversary of the New York Tri-State Area's McDonald's "Check It Out" Reading Program, which offers children in grades K-4 incentives for reading during the summer.

Since the program's inception in 1998, the reading program has successfully promoted summer reading for more than 1 million children. To celebrate the anniversary of the program, Ronald McDonald will embark on the "Ronald and Me" reading tour during the summer, visiting local libraries throughout the New York Tri-State Area sharing his love for reading.

This year, in addition to valuable tips and fun games, the "Check It Out" booklets — available in both English and Spanish — will feature a list of different ways to celebrate reading.

"The 'Check It Out" Reading Program is an excellent way to build great reading habits beyond the normal school year," said Pat Vasilik, children's coordinator at the Clifton Public Library. "It is great to see programs like 'Check It Out' as they foster reading, education and imagination."

Children can participate in the "Check It Out" reading program by visiting a local library in the New York Tri-State area and asking an adult or librarian to help them completethe McDonald's "Check It Out" booklet with the titles of the five books they have read during the summer.

To request a "Check It Out" reading booklet, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: McDonald's "Check It Out" Reading Program, c/o MWW Group; One Meadowlands Plaza, 6th Floor, East Rutherford, NJ 07073. Limit two booklets per household.

The program includes a coupon for a free Happy Meal. To redeem, children should be accompanied by an adult and bring in their signed booklet to participating McDonald's from June 30 through Sept. 5, 2008. An alternate prize can be obtained by following the instructions on the back of the booklet.
