PETA again targets McDonald's for slaughter methods

Chicago Tribune: Nine years after calling a truce with McDonald's Corp., People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says it is going on a new offensive against the company over chicken slaughtering methods. PETA is promoting the European method of slaughtering chickens by gassing them first over the conventional method in the United States of knocking chickens unconscious with a jolt of electricity and then having their throats cut. PETA claims the former induces less suffering and is targeting McDonald's and KFC Corp. PETA has been waging war against KFC since 2003 with its "Kentucky Fried Cruelty" campaign, boycotting the firm and staging thousands of protests at KFC restaurants. PETA is reinstating the "McCruelty" campaign it last used against McDonald's in 2000, starting with a planned protest Monday featuring rock star Chrissie Hynde at the McDonald's in River North, Ill., the organization said.
