Popeyes 3Q comps down

ATLANTA — AFC Enterprises Inc., franchisor and operator of Popeyes Chicken &
Biscuits, reported results for its fiscal third quarter ended Oct. 7, 2007.
Domestic same-store sales decreased 1.9 percent, compared to an increase of 0.2 percent last year, and global same-store sales decreased 1.7 percent, compared to flat results for the third quarter of last year.
Revenues were $38.9 million, a $2.9 million increase over the third quarter of 2006. The increase was composed of approximately $2.8 million from the reopening of company-operated restaurants in New Orleans, $1 million from new openings of company-operated restaurants in Atlanta and a $1 million increase in franchise revenue, primarily driven by sales from new franchised restaurants.
Net income was $6.5 million, compared to net income of $5.9 million last year.
Popeyes had 1,881 units operating at the end of the third quarter, compared to 1,845 units at the end of the third quarter last year. Total unit count was 1,567 domestic units and 314 units in 24 foreign countries and two territories. Of this total, 1,820 were franchised and 61 were company-operated restaurants.
