Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen announced today its new menu offering, beer can chicken. According to Hector Munoz, CMO, the new LTO was inspired from backyard grills and Southern barbecues.
"The legendary beer can seasonings and Popeyes' dedication to true southern-cooked food makes beer can chicken a natural offering for Popeyes customers," he said in a news release.
It features a whole chicken breast marinated in lemon zest, butter, garlic, rosemary and cayenne pepper. The breast is then hand-battered in Popeyes crispy southern coating and fried. Each beer can chicken breast is cut into three strips and served with Cajun fries, a biscuit and Popeyes' new spicy dipping sauce for just $3.99.
The new sauce – creamy Cayenne – includes aged Cayenne peppers, jalapenos, garlic, molasses and a dash of vinegar.
Popeyes' VP of Culinary Innovation, Amy Alarcon, said beer can chicken is a "time-honored tradition" in the South.
"It's all about slow roasting a chicken on the grill with a blend of herbs and half a can of beer that makes for the juiciest, most flavorful chicken around," she said. "In honor of this classic, Popeyes has created our very own version … While it's not made with any actual beer, we've managed to capture the flavor with our own unique spices."
The beer can chicken is available now through Oct. 25. Popeye's spokeswoman Annie will introduce the new offering in a nationally televised commercial.
