Popeyes sell out of chicken sandwiches ... a nation weeps

Around the time lines were wrapping around an Atlanta KFC store, with customers hoping for a bite of the chain's plant-based Beyond Chicken nuggets, lines were also forming around Popeyes stores of customers who wanted to sink their teeth into the real thing, in this case a new chicken sandwich LTO at the Southern-souled chain.

But like the plant-based chicken at KFC that sold out in under 5 hours, the real thing at Popeyes also failed to survive for long, with the chain telling its social media channel followers around 4 p.m. Tuesday that it had sold out of the sandwich, which debuted just two weeks earlier nationwide. On Twitter, Popeyes simply blamed the sellout on "extraordinary demand."

"Y'all," started one Popeyes tweet, "we love that you love The Sandwich. Unfortunately we're sold out (for now)."

The brioche bun/chicken filet combo was supposed to last to late September, but the chain told CNN (yes, the sellout of Popeyes chicken sandwich sellout was a story on CNN), that it would work "tirelessly to bring the new sandwich back to guests as soon as possible."

The moral of this story is that if you're a QSR in this country, you darn well better have a chicken sandwich or at least something that tastes like one. And if you're smart, you'll have way more of it than you think you'll ever need.
