Quiznos gyros ... 'er 'jai-ros' return

October 2, 2018

It's the eternal question: How do you really pronounce "gyro?" And now, at least in Canada, we have a completely unscientific answer thanks to Quiznos' recent Canadian Twitter poll on the subject,  as part of a run-up to the chain's return of Greek gyro flatbreads and subs.

The poll of nearly 3,500 Canadians found that — at least in the sprawling North American country —  the preferred pronunciation of gyro is "jai-ro," winning 48 percent of the votes. That was followed by "Yeer-oh" with 25 percent, then "gee-ro" at 17 percent and a mere 9 percent who used "hee-ro." No word on whether anyone said "guy-row" or any other of what most Greeks would surely see as an outright adulteration of the word, a news release said.

But all of those pronunciations will undoubtedly be accepted by customers, who want a $1 Gyro Flatbread Sammie on Oct. 17. Loyalty app customers can also get a free gyro flatbread Oct. 10 - 16. The bargain sandwiches are being offered as a way of announcing the return of the concoction to the Quiznos menu with slow-roasted beef and lamb for a limited time. Two varieties include the Gyro Flatbread Sammie and the Gyro Sub Sandwich.

The first offering is priced at $3.99 and includes seasoned beef and lamb in flatbread, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, feta cheese, banana peppers and cucumber tzatziki sauce. The gyro sub has the same ingredients on Quiznos' traditional toasted 6-inch($6.99), 9-inch ($8.49) or 12-inch sub ($9.99).
