Quiznos Sub makes move to upgrade restaurants overnight
April 20, 2003
Monday April 21, 7:01 am ET DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 2003--Quiznos Sub, America's fastest growing sandwich chain(a), continues to raise the bar in the competitive restaurant industry by announcing several innovative store enhancements that will be rolled out across the more than two thousand Quiznos Sub stores this year. Each store conversion will take place overnight and open for the next day of business with an upgraded format. "Call it the Quiznos version of the national cable show `While You Were Out'," said Brooksy Smith, Executive Vice President of Quiznos Sub. "When our last customer leaves the restaurant for the evening, the doors will lock, a construction and installation crew will arrive, and the store will be converted overnight. By the time the first customer arrives to the restaurant the next morning, the construction will be complete." "The new store enhancements are in keeping with our desire to be the Quick Service Restaurant Leader by insuring the best customer experience possible," Smith said. The plans for this new, upgraded format came from extensive customer research and feedback. "This is a totally integrated program, including staff training by a special customer experience team. Over 40 customer experience employees were hired by Quiznos to assist with the conversion. One team member is assigned to each store while its being converted to ensure a smooth transition. "We want to insure that the customer experience is flawless," Smith added. Quiznos Master LLC has agreed to pick up the tab for the entire cost of renovation. The expense and speed at which the restaurants are being converted is unprecedented in the restaurant industry. "We've been asked how we can afford to do this? We ask, how can a brand not afford to do this? Our customer's experience is first and foremost. Of course we wanted to 'wow' our customers with a new and innovative restaurant format," said Smith. "We strived to upgrade our stores so that everyone's Quiznos experience is as memorable as our toasted subs." One of the enhancements for the restaurants includes an updated logo for the chain. Formerly Quizno's Subs, the chain has lost the parentheses and the "s" on Subs to feature a "Q" design followed by "Quiznos Sub". All stores are fitted with lower counters that make it much easier for customers to see Quiznos fresh ingredients and watch the Quiznos team freshly cut the bread and prepare the sandwich. "The low-cut counters give our guests the chance to see all the fresh ingredients as they are being piled up on their sandwich. Seeing is believing. And our customers can now see the fresh, quality ingredients that we use," said Smith. The announced changes include not only improved store ambience, but also food preparation enhancements and functions. One of the most popular enhancements is a full-service pepper bar. Customers can add a bit more spice to their subs with a delicious selection of jalapenos, pepperocini, banana peppers and pickles as well as three signature sauces -- creamy horseradish, honey mustard and Red Wine Vinaigrette. "The pepper bar is one of my favorite additions to our new design," said Smith. "People can customize their subs as they wish by adding their favorite peppers and spices to the sandwich. It suits everyone's unique tastes. This enhancement is a direct response to customer requests." In response to the popularity of Quiznos signature sauces, Quiznos also is introducing Jimmy's Batch 81 Three Pepper Chili Sauce that can be added to subs at the pepper bar or purchased separately for home use. A new state-of-the art beverage station gives customers new choices. It is a self-service beverage bar, showcased by bold new signage and attractive beverage containers filled with premium-iced teas. The station is further enhanced with a new beverage bubbler offering Minute Maid Raspberry Lemonade made with real fruit. A new bread cabinet becomes the focal point at the beginning of the ordering line, allowing customers to see the current variety of fresh artisan breads available for toasting. Redesigned menu boards are easier to read and provide more detailed descriptions of the sandwiches and their ingredients. "Quiznos customers have sophisticated tastes and they are more health conscious -- they want to know what ingredients are in each sandwich," said Smith. "With the new menu board, we are helping them understand which of our fresh, quality ingredients and signature sauces go into each Quiznos sandwich recipe." Quiznos Sub, headquartered in Denver, Colorado, has more than 2,000 locations worldwide. Best known for toasting its signature sub sandwiches, this quick-service restaurant is a leader in the upscale sandwich category.
