Rally's and Checkers launch greener way to build units

November 29, 2016

Checkers, next month in South Florida, is opening its first unit designed specifically to cut build time and promote greener material sourcing. The prototype, which is available to Checkers and Rally's franchisees, will cut five weeks to three months from the overall construction timeline per store with one innovative option also offering a more environmentally responsible source of materials, according to a company press release.

The new designs are all part of an overall growth strategy for both brands, which have both experienced a year of what a news release said is record-breaking growth.

The 4.0 design, which includes a build-out option that uses recycled shipping containers as an environmentally friendly construction material for the restaurants, is part of a stepped-up commitment to helping franchisees achieve and maintain profitability. The plans accomplish this important task by stripping the new store construction process down to a more streamlined, cost-effective and time-sensitive model, according to the release.

Under the new plan, franchisees for the two brands will have the following three designs to choose from:

  • Newly engineered, but still traditional on-site build designed to maximize ROI.
  • An off-site-built modular structure.
  • A hybrid building that uses former shipping containers as structural support.

The first manifestations of these new designs will pop up next year in South Florida, Los Angeles, Nashville, Columbus, Tampa and Houston. In the second half of 2017, full nationwide development with the designs will begin, as well.

The chains have more than 840 sites and 250 in development.
