Subway adds nearly 500 stores in Q1 2009

MILFORD, Conn. —During the first quarter of this year (January 1 to March 31), the Subway restaurant chain opened 484 new locations spanning 42 countries, 39 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces, bringing the total number of Subway restaurants around the world to more than 30,800, the company has announced.
 
Thanks to the $5 Footlong promotion and continued development across the globe, the year 2008 marked one of the most successful periods in the history of the Subway restaurant chain as it hit the 30,000 store mark.
 
With an average crew of 10, the 484 new Subway restaurants have provided jobs for nearly 5,000 men and women. The total number of filled positions chainwide comes to about 300,000.
 
All Subway restaurants are individually owned and operated by independent franchisees.
 
2009 milestones
 
Internationlly, the Subway chain crossed the 8,600 mark for international locations within the first three months of 2009. The number includes regional milestones such as 2,400 restaurants in Canada; 1,300 in the United Kingdom; 1,100 in Australia; 700 stores in Germany; 200 in Brazil; 100 in Ireland; and 50 Russia. The chain also saw the premier of its first outlet in Macau.
 
Domestically, the Subway chain has reached the 22,000 store milestone for locations open and operating across the United States, including 1,700 just within the state of Texas.
 
Because of the chain's minimal equipment and space requirements, the number of Subway restaurants in the non-traditional category has increased to more than 7,100 locations in places such as airports, amusement parks, college campuses, department stores, train stations and health clubs. The ongoing ability to remain flexible equates to Subway restaurants operating inside 3,600 convenience stores, truck stops and highway rest areas; 1,600 park and recreational facilities, tourist attractions and entertainment venues; 1,600 retail business, including select Wal-mart, Home Depot and Lowes stores; 260 military bases; 150 hospitals; and 95 grocery stores throughout the world.
 
In the first quarter of 2009, Subway opened the following:
  • Airports: 3 locations
  • International business & industry: 2 locations
  • Colleges & schools: 20 locations
  • Convenience stores/truck stops/travel centers: 76 locations
  • Government: 1 location
  • Grocery stores: 2 locations
  • Hospitals: 5 locations
  • Hotels: 2 international locations
  • Military: 7 locations, including at the U.S. Embassy Compound, Baghdad, Iraq
  • Parks/recreation/tourist: 6 locations
  • Retail stores: 34 locations
  • Transportation: 9 international locations
  • Unique Locations: 1, in Orchard Road Christian Center, Greenwood Village, Colo.
