Subway adopts 50,000 honeybees at world HQ campus

Upon learning that nearly three-quarters of the bees in Subway's corporate headquarter state of Connecticut died last year, the brand initiated an ambitious program to help with the worldwide loss of these crucial insects by make its Milford, Connecticut World Headquarters home for more than 50,000 bees.

The brand said in a news release that bees, their survival globally and overall health, is key to maintaining the world's food supply since they directly impact 30% to 40% of that food. 

Subway is partnering with Milford-area family-owned Hurd's Farm & Apiary to "adopt" and care for the 50,000 bees, while training a team of 75 corporate employees to tend to them.  

"Honey bees play a critical role in our world — not only to the foods we serve at Subway — but industries around the world. ..." Subway Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility John Scott said in the release. "Our headquarters property offers bees the perfect home — plenty of greenery with flowers and water from two large ponds."
