The Subway chain has reached several milestones over the past few months, including the most recent opening of its 1,000th store in Asia.
Within the first six months of this year, Subway opened 1,000 new locations in total and plans to open 1,000-plus more by the end of this year.
Other milestones reached within the first six months included the opening of the chain's 200th store in India, the opening of the 200th store in China, and the opening of the first Subway in Vietnam.
By year's end, Subway anticipates adding another 250 outlets in Asia, and has plans to reach 2,500 units in that region by 2015.
"Subway is well recognized as a healthier fast food choice in China and is gaining popularity among young people. This gives us the confidence to know that our growth goals will be reached," said Feng Xia, Subway's development agent in Guangzhou, China.
Focusing on local fare
The chain's success in these expanding territories has been buoyed by the adaptation of local culinary preferences. For example, in India, signatures include the Paneer Tikka, Chicken Tandoori and Aloo Patty sandwiches, alongside the classics. Subway restaurants do not serve pork or beef products in India.
"We worked closely with local chefs and regional suppliers to ensure a good balance of vegetarian and non vegetarian items, along with many traditional Subway menu items, all specifically selected to appeal to the Indian palate," said Robby Gulri, Subway franchisee, area development manager and development agent, who along with his brother, Bobby, first brought the Subway concept to India in 2001.
Subway's expansion into Vietnam began in Ho Chi Minh City. Two more units are in development, and the chain anticipates having 50 outlets in the country by 2015.
