Subway opens milestone location in LA

February 27, 2011

The Subway restaurant chain has opened its 600th location in the Los Angeles area. The milestone outlet is owned by multi-unit Subway franchisees Parvis “Perry” Mohammadi, Mehrangiz “Mehry” Goodarzi and Sharab “Sherry” Siegel.

The new Subway is located inside of Union Station, a Los Angeles landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is located in a kiosk setting, totaling 250 square feet, but offers full-store service.

Because it is located in a historical building, permitting for the new location had to go through the historical board.

"We are thrilled to have the privilege of opening the 600th Subway restaurant in Los Angeles and appreciate all the support from our valued customers, as well as the staff of the local Subway development office. Without them, we would not be here today," said Mohammadi.

Mohammadi, a former engineer, and his wife, Goodarzi, a banker, first became members of the Subway family in 1996. Daughter, Siegel, later joined them after working as an attorney. The Union Station location is their 8th Subway restaurant, and the family's goal is to reach the "lucky number 13."

In addition to Union Station, the family also operates Subway restaurants in Sunland, Pasadena, and downtown Los Angeles.

The 500th Subway restaurant in the L.A. market opened in June 2008.

In 2010, the Subway chain, headquartered in Milford, Conn., opened 2,147 new units throughout the world. The year lifted Subway’s systemwide restaurant count to a total of 33,959 in 96 countries. The chain reached its record of 33,000 worldwide stores in June, and surpassed McDonald’s, which has about 32,000 locations in 117 countries.

These two quick-service giants tower over No. 3 KFC, which has more than 20,000 units in 109 countries.
