Subway plans to double China units

July 4, 2011

Subway is planning a major expansion in China throughout the next five years. The China Daily reports that the chain, which passed McDonald's earlier this year as the biggest in the world, plans to double its presence in the country.

Subway currently has 220 stores in China. Seventy-three of those are in Beijing. Alexander Moody-Stuart, Subway franchise's general agent in Beijing, said there should be 180 stores in Beijing and well over 600 in China by 2015.

The impetus behind this growth comes partly from a successful 2010, in which total sales revenue grew more than 40 percent from the prior year.

Subway made its first footprint in China in 1995.

As part of the expansion, Subway plans on opening drive-thru locations, adding localized flavors to the menu and increasing its catering presence.
