Subway is using the significant power of its 40,000-plus worldwide locations this Friday to amp up the volume on its campaign to fight hunger globally. Friday, Nov. 3, is World Sandwich Day and Subway is using the occasion as a jumping-off point for a global “Live Feed” campaign, a news release said.
Participating restaurants in approximately 60 countries are asking customers to get involved by donating Subway meals to local hunger relief efforts. In the U.S., Subway is partnering with the nation’s largest hunger-relief organization, Feeding America, to combat hunger in the states. Each customer who buys a sandwich and 30-ounce drink on Nov. 3 will get a free sandwich with that purchase, and give Subway the nod to give a meal to Feeding America.
To track the campaign’s progress the brand will "pop up" a Subway Live Feed Headquarters Nov. 3 in New York's Madison Square Park.
"As a global food company, we are passionate about the fight against hunger," Subway President and CEO Suzanne Greco said in the release. "We want to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food."
The brand’s NYC Live Feed Headquarters will serve as an interactive hub where guests track the number of meals donated globally on a real-time ticker while enjoying DJ sets, free sandwich samples, giveaways and a performance by pop singer Andy Grammer. The location will have an active kitchen making sandwiches for real-time donations to the Feeding America Network Member Food Bank for New York City.
"Last year, our customers helped us make history with the largest single-day donation to Feeding America — 11 million meals," Greco said in the release. "This year's unprecedented initiative will include thousands of Subway restaurants around the globe."
One in every eight people in the U.S. faces hunger, according to the USDA. This equates to 41 million people nationwide, including nearly 13 million children and more than 5 million seniors.
