Toast Inc. announced Wednesday a $5 million philanthropic commitment over the next five years to combat global food insecurity, beginning with a U.S. partnership with No Kid Hungry.

The restaurant technology platform said it plans to mobilize its customers and guests through Toast Fundraising campaigns and will launch a Toast.org grant program to support local anti-hunger relief efforts across the country, according to a press release.

Toast CEO and co-founder Aman Narang signed the No Kid Hungry's CEO Pledge to End Summer Hunger, an initiative aimed at increasing access to summertime meals for children. Only 13% of children who rely on free or reduced-price school meals have access to them during the summer months, according to the company.

"Toast is committed to enriching the food experience for all," Narang said in the release. "We're uniquely positioned to mobilize the entire restaurant ecosystem... to make a tangible difference."

Billy Shore, co-founder and executive chair of No Kid Hungry, said one in five children in America live with hunger.

"Our research shows that families struggle even more during the summer," Shore said in the release.

Specific initiatives include a $250,000 grant to No Kid Hungry to support state policies, donations from new customer referrals from June through August, and a matching of guest donations up to $50,000 in July. Toast employees will also volunteer at summer meal sites.

The efforts build on Toast's existing philanthropy, including recent product enhancements enabling its merchants to accept SNAP/EBT payments.
