U.S. sales help lift McDonald's April comps

May 7, 2009

OAK BROOK, Ill. — McDonald's Corp.'s global comparable-store sales rose 6.9 percent in April, marking the 72nd consecutive monthly increase, the company has announced. Comparable sales increases by segment include:
  • United States, up 6.1 percent, compared to an increase of 2 percent in the same month last year
  • Europe, up 8.4 percent, compared to an increase of 6.3 percent in the same month last year
  • Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa, up 6.5 percent, compared to an increase of 7.8 percent in the same month last year
Year to date, McDonald's global comps are up 5.0 percent, compared to an increase of 6.8 percent last year.

Systemwide sales for McDonald's worldwide restaurants declined 1.0 percent for the month, but increased 8.9 percent in constant currencies.

In the United States, the ongoing appeal of McDonald's core menu, beverages including the new McCafe coffees and chicken Snack Wraps contributed to April's comps growth.

Europe delivered strong comps growth for the month, partly due to the benefit of the Easter holiday shift. Leading Europe's performance was the United Kingdom, which saw success with its tiered menu offerings and a popular Monopoly promotion. France, Russia and Germany also posted positive comps.

In Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa, April comps were driven by Australia and Japan, partly offset by China. Locally relevant menu choices, everyday affordability and extended hours contributed to April's performance.
