Wendy's intros Spicy Chicken Nuggets

January 5, 2010

Wendy's has added heat to its chicken nuggets with three kinds of peppers plus savory spices, combining the growing popularity of chicken as a protein at quick-service restaurants and Americans' penchant for spicy foods. The new Spicy Chicken Nuggets are available for 99 cents for five pieces.

Last year, Wendy's introduced its white meat boneless chicken wings available with three different sauce profiles. The chain also features regular and now spicy chicken nuggets in a 10-pack.

Poultry is popular with many consumers for its better-for-you nutritional profile, but QSRs like its price point on the supply side, according to a blog on knoxvillebiz.com.

From the blog:
Ron Gorodesky, president of Pennsylvania-based consulting firm Restaurant Advisory Services, looked at the question (of the growing popularity of chicken QSR chains) from the supply side, saying that chicken is "the most … reliably priced protein that's out there."

"You don't see cost fluctuations with poultry that you see with other products, especially beef," he added.
