CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas brands Whataburger and Dr Pepper have announced they are collaborating this summer to showcase Hispanic artists from across the country with the Sabrosura Art Tour. The tour will make 38 stops at Whataburger restaurants in Texas and New Mexico during July and August to display the work of 23 Hispanic artists.
Professional, student and amateur artists submitted hundreds of original artwork pieces during the online Dr Pepper Sabrosura Art Contest last fall. Online voters chose the finalists, whose artwork reflected themes that tied to "Sabrosura," which translates to "tastiness."
The pieces will be displayed in a special mobile gallery that will travel to Whataburger locations in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Corpus Christi, Del Rio, Laredo, El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley and Albuquerque.
The grand prize winner, Maricela Garza from McAllen, Texas, describes her inspiration as the "Los multicolores de la vida latina" and her mission with her artwork is "to promote art awareness, cultivate friendships and enrich lives through cultural art."
In selected cities, the tour will include personal appearances by the artists who will sign copies of their work. At each event, an 18-by-24-inch reproduction of the framed art will be given away in a raffle drawing. In addition to the art, the tour also will feature music, interactive games, coupons and prize drawings.
The tour will kick off July 9, 2008, in Dallas and will end Aug. 24 in Houston.
