White Castle is amping up its plant-based menu item presence, saying it will launch a dairy-free cheddar option in New York- and New Jersey-area restaurants starting March 1, according to a news release. The addition makes the regional chain one of the nation's first to offer a dairy-free alternative to cheddar cheese, which is often added to burgers and other fast food entrees.

White Castle said the cheese can be added to any slider, including its array of plant-based option patty sandwiches, like the pioneering Veggie Slider, from Dr. Praeger's, which debuted five years ago, and the Black Bean Slider sold in retail outlets only.

"We're committed to innovation, and we're always looking for ways to do things better and make things better for our loyal customers," Jamie Richardson, vice president of White Castle, said in the release. "It's exciting to be the fast-food restaurant that's leading the trend in providing plant-based options for consumers."

Today White Castle owns and operates more than 365 restaurants nationally and distributes its products at retail outlets across the country.
