White Castle goes '100-happy' in Burger Month, opens system's biggest store

White Castle has pegged its latest promotion to National Burger Month, which starts Saturday, May 1 and this year falls within the brand's celebration of its centennial.
As the official sponsor of National Burger Month the brand is offering a month of specials, including a sweepstakes that will net one customer a $100,000 grand prize, a news release said.
"White Castle is the official sponsor of National Hamburger Month, having created the month-long event in 1991 to pay homage to the Original Slider we created and the industry we pioneered," President and CEO Lisa Ingram said in the release. "So it's always a special occasion for us, but especially this year as we celebrate our hundredth birthday. We look forward to having some fun this month with our Craver fans."
On Saturday White Castle will introduce its decade-themed Time Machine Sweepstakes that will explore the brand's past, present and give customers a chance at thousands of prizes, from a year's worth of sliders or Telfar shopping bag, to personalized booths at a restaurant or the winner's name in light on a White Castle exterior sign. Then there's that top prize of $100,000 cash.
To participate in the sweepstakes, consumers can go online to WhiteCastleTimeMachine.com and can enter every day through July 11.
From 1 centenarian to another
White Castle said about 90,000 people in the U.S. are also celebrating their 100th birthday this year and the chain is calling out two who have a big soft-spot in their hearts for sliders. Livonia, Michigan World War II vet, Joseph Girolamo and Chicago resident, Ann Lynch, will each get a special note from White Castle CEO Lisa Ingram and a complimentary White Castle meal for themselves and a few guests.
Sliders return to Sunshine State
Lastly, this Burger Month, White Castle is opening its first Florida store on May 3 in Orlando, marking the brand's return to the Sunshine State since operating four restaurants in Miami in the 1960s. The 4,567-square-foot restaurant — the largest free-standing White Castle in the world — offers two drive-thru lanes and seating for 72 indoors and 56 outdoors.
Once the Orlando castle is open, White Castle will have restaurants in 15 states. Its retail Sliders are available in all 50 states. White Castle, based in Columbus, Ohio, now has more than 360 restaurants in its system.
